by Marissa Falco Somerville, MA 12 pages, stapled
With my second Minnesota winter looming (eek!), I'm so glad to have discovered Marissa Falco's quarter-page zine "Winter Thoughts" (Miss Sequential #6). Based in New England, Falco gives us a peek inside of her snowy world—what in the heck is happening with hands inside mittens; a layer-wearing primer; and recommendations on what to eat, watch, read, and listen to during the winter season. One of my favorite parts of the zine is a 2-page spread discussing an artist/writer's fellowship in Antarctica that Falco is dreaming of. In her own words:
"There is something thrilling about taking yourself to a place so different from the place in which you usually make art..."
Yes, yes, a thousand times YES. This zine is beautifully illustrated and I love the mix of the typewriter and handwritten text. Oh! And when I went to add a book Falco recommends to my Goodreads shelf, I noticed that it had been recommended to me by another friend just 2 months ago. Must be fate!
