My first split zine! Half of this quarter sized zine (Tongueswell #3) is written by Jen T. and half is written by Heather C. (Dig Deep #7). "Tongueswell" is a perzine with entries from spring 2014 through spring 2015, detailing Jen's experiences in customer service and the death of her Maine Coon cat named Tribble. Both are equally disturbing. I had to put a beloved cat to sleep due to illness a few years ago, and reading this half of the zine brought up a lot of those feelings—the power of animal/human bonds and the helplessness I felt as the one responsible for breaking them.
In "Dig Deep," Heather writes about her experience training for a half-marathon. She doesn't end up running it due to injuries, but along the way she weaves in a lot of other important topics—anxiety about being alone in public, her relationship to her body, being on display/street harassment, and being a good friend. I love her voice and have never felt such an immediate kinship to a writer before. The similarities between my life right now and the topics discussed in the zine are eerily similar, down to an iPod frozen in time. I was so inspired by this zine that I hopped back on Etsy and purchased all of the back issues.
